General Data Protection Regulation Policy

Brushes Up holds personal data in the processing of its Chimney Sweeping business. The data originates from customers who request Brushes Up by telephone, email, Facebook Messenger or Twitter, to visit them in the course of Chimney Sweeping or other chimney related services. The Data Controller is Paul Pressley.

In respect of each customer, at the time of booking a chimney sweep, a record is made on a standalone database, called the Digital Sweeps (2011) database. This record is updated at the conclusion of the chimney sweep visit. The Digital Sweeps (2011) database is designed expressly for the purpose of operating a chimney sweep business and is held on the office computer at Brushes Up, it is not Cloud based, or otherwise shared and is owned and managed for the purpose of carrying on Chimney Sweeping within the business.

The necessity for a record to be held is to enable annual customer reminders, or more frequently if required, so as to comply with the laid down Fire Service and Guild of Master Chimney Sweeps and HETAS safety recommendations for at least annual chimney sweeping, to reduce domestic and commercial chimney fire risk and carbon monoxide poisoning and compliance with buildings insurance requirements.

Personal data is held lawfully in compliance with GDPR, with the express consent of customers, obtained by a positive opt-in – at the time of issuing the Certificate of Chimney Sweeping, by customer signature against a declaration which states

“I give consent for Brushes Up to hold my personal data for the express purpose of issuing reminder messages only.”

It is separate from other terms and conditions.
